Passport photo shadow: the three types that cause rejection and the fix for each

Shadows are the number one reason home-taken passport photos get rejected. There are three distinct types: a background shadow behind the head, a face shadow across the eyes, nose, chin, or one side of the face, and an edge shadow that blends hair or shoulders into the background wall. Shadow type one: background shadow

The head creates a dark outline — often shaped like a halo — that breaks the plain-background requirement. The cause is always physical proximity to the background. When you stand close to a wall, your body blocks some of the light that would otherwise reach the wall behind you. The result is a shadow shaped like your silhouette, darker than the surrounding background. This shadow appears whether the lighting is from the front, the side, or above — any light source that hits your front or side also creates a shadow on the wall immediately behind you. The fix: Move 3 to 5 feet — approximately 1 to 1.5 metres — away from the wall. This distance allows light to spread evenly around the body and reach the background directly, so no shadow is cast. Shadow type two: face shadow

Face shadows fall on the face itself — under the nose, under the chin, in the eye sockets, or across one side of the face. This type of shadow directly interferes with biometric landmark detection and is the most likely to trigger automated rejection. Overhead ceiling light shadow is the most common cause. Ceiling lights drop shadows into your eye sockets and under your chin. These chin and eye socket shadows can distort facial features and cause rejection. The fix: turn off all ceiling lights and use eye-level lighting instead, such as facing a window or using a desk lamp positioned at the same height as your face. This is the single most impactful lighting change available in most home settings. Side light shadow creates a different pattern: one side of the face is well-lit and the other is darker. Side lighting occurs when light hits your face from only one direction, creating dark shadows that interfere with facial recognition scans. The fix: face your light source directly. Shadow type three: edge shadow

An edge shadow blends the hair, ears, or shoulders into the background wall, making the face boundary ambiguous for automated face detection. This happens when the subject's hair or clothing colour is similar to a shadowed area of the background, creating a merged boundary rather than a clear face-to-background edge. Edge shadows are less common than background or face shadows and are often produced by the combination of a position too close to the wall (creating a background shadow) and an overhead light (creating a downward shadow that darkens the area where the hair meets the background). Moving away from the wall and switching to front-facing light simultaneously fixes the edge shadow problem in most cases. The specific situation where edge shadow is most problematic: dark hair against a white background when the background has a shadow. The shadow makes the background grey in the area behind the hair, reducing contrast between the dark hair edge and the grey background. The face-detection algorithm can't find the face boundary clearly, which produces a "face not detected" result even though the face is clearly visible to a human viewer.

The correct lighting setup

The easiest way to fix all three shadow types at once is to face a large window with natural daylight during the day. Stand away from the wall — at least 1 metre — face the window directly so the light hits both sides of the face evenly, and turn off overhead ceiling lights. This single setup change resolves background shadows (the distance from the wall), face shadows (the front-facing even light), and edge shadows (the clear contrast between the lit face and the correctly lit background). Natural window light is the best option. Stand facing a window during daylight hours and avoid direct sunlight for even and natural lighting. An overcast day is perfect — clouds diffuse the light, spreading it evenly. For artificial light: Place two diffused light sources at approximately 45 degrees to the left and right of the camera at eye level. This minimises shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. The two lamps should be identical in brightness and colour temperature — mixing warm and cool bulbs creates a colour cast on one side of the face. Both should be at face height, not above it. What doesn't fix shadows

The one approach that doesn't work for shadow problems is post-capture editing. Any grey area on the background is a background shadow. If present: increase distance from the background wall. Second, the face: Are both eye sockets equally bright, or is one darker? Is there a visible shadow line under the nose or chin? Is one cheek visibly darker than the other? Any of these is a face shadow. If present: turn off ceiling lights and use front-facing natural light.
